The map of the exploring illustrator
Travel to an encounter with fables and landscape, with characters that inhabit literature and our own experiences. Work on exercises and creative processes in which experimentation and intuition will follow order and analysis, seeking the union between expression and meaning. Using different techniques (monotypes, ink on canvas, India ink, water paint, oil, pencils) we will travel through a path of images and words with the aim of creating new stories. Like the old travelers, our brush will draw seas, deserts, animals, monsters, cities, forests, mirrors. On our path we will find characters and scenarios, but also lines, texture, composition, color. Fundamental concepts of visual language as abstraction and figuration, symbol and syntax. Geography, botany, imaginary zoology. A walk between reality and fantasy.
Jesús Cisneros was born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1969. He studied illustration at the School of Arts and history of art at the University of Zaragoza He has collaborated with publishers in Spain, England, Italy, France, Mexico, and Colombia. Between 2013 and 2018 he lived in Mexico City where he was combining his work as an illustrator with teaching on several universities. At the end of last year he moved back to Spain. He works and resides in his home town Zaragoza and is traveling around Europe and abroad holding workshops. His work was exhibited in 2018 in Mexico and will be a shown in Marseilles at the end of this year. In his work Jesús seeks the encounter between diverse worlds such as drawing, painting, literature and cinema.
The six days lasting workshop will take place at the former Schlossgärtnerei in Gerswalde, a small village in the heart of Uckermark around 100km north of Berlin. In the last years various young creators moved to this quiet rural place and founded amongst others Grosser Garten, Café zum Löwen and the art gallery Löwen.haus. On Sunday we will meet at Café zum Löwen for a first welcome and an introduction to the theme. From Monday till Friday we will work at Grosser Garten, where the beauty of the scenery and its surrounding nature will be a source of inspiration.
Sunday 11.08.2019 till Friday 16.08.2019
The course will start on Sunday afternoon, so there is time to get to Gerswalde. On Friday we are going to work the hole day and you will get back to Berlin in the late evening. So if you are traveling from far away, it is recommendable to organize your stay in Berlin over night.
The group will be accommodated at the nearby Haus Neudorf. Price per person for 5 nights is 92,50€. Reservations can be made via us.
Ayumi Saito and her lovely team of Café zum Löwen will prepare lunch and dinner for us while working at Grosser Garten.
They also take care of the breakfast, which will be self-serviced at Haus Neudorf. Price per person is 140€.
To be more independent at site we recommend to come by car (you can organize as a group with other participants) or bring a bicycle.
If bringing your own vehicle is no option for you, Gerswalde can be reached by public transport.
There are trains running between Berlin and Wilmerdorf, from there you take the bus to Gerswalde.
Between Gerswalde and Haus Neudorf a shuttle service can be booked by extra charge.
The course is open for anybody, it is not necessary to have previous knowledge in illustration.
Please note that a minimum of 10 participants is needed to realize the course.
The course will be held in Spanish with translation to English.
